2016 Hyundai Tucson Launched in India, Starting at INR 18.99 Lakh

The leading South Korean auto-manufacturer, Hyundai has Launched the 2016 Tucson SUV in India at a starting price of INR 18.99 Lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), while the range-topping model costs INR 24.99 Lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The new Tucson is offered with the choice of a 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engine, and will fill the gap between the premium SUV, Santa Fe and the best-selling crossover, Creta. The growing trend for the SUVs in the Indian market and moreover, after the Creta made sensation around the corner with its record-breaking sales and came out with the flying colours, now, the South Korean is battling big on the SUV space.

Let's take you back in the time, in 2004, the Hyundai Tucson has already marked its presence in the country as the first generation model and then discontinued after five years due to falling demand. Now, Tucson is back in its latest avatar, though it has to be seen whether it is proved as a trump card for the maker. Bookings for the SUV have already been started and can be availed at a token amount of INR 25,000.

Coming on the appearance of the Hyundai’s new big boy, who can forget the glimpses of 2016 Auto Expo where a list of automakers came up with their most updated and fresh players, and one of them is the 2016 Tucson. It attracted many visitors via its fluidic design language and elegant appeal. The face of the car is dominated by a large chrome accented hexagonal grille, swept back LED headlights and LED daytime running lights. Further, the car features more rounded body panels than its sibling Santa Fe. High shoulder line and waistline further enhance its design ideology, while the glow of the rear profile is heightened by dual exhaust pipe, skid plate, a sloping roofline and wrap-around LED tail-lamps. In terms of the dimensions, it measures 4,475 mm in length, 1,850 mm in width, 1,645 mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,670 mm.

The interiors of the latest Tucson SUV looks similar to that of the recently launched new Elantra. However, the cabin design is completely different and complemented by the high-end features in terms of both safety and comfort. Instead of the big 7-seat arrangement, the 2016 Tucson targets a plush five-seater segment. Since the new Tucson sits above the Creta, it gets a slew of updated features and equipment including the dual-zone climate control, a 4.2-inch touchscreen entertainment system, automatic climate control, an 8-inch smart infotainment system (Android Auto and Apple CarPlay) connect to the six speakers.

Some of the other regular features include ventilated front seats, automatic climate control, smart powered tailgate, reverse parking camera with the sensors and rain-sensing wipers. On the safety front, it houses autonomous emergency braking system, tyre pressure monitoring system, Lane Keeping Assist System, blind spot detection, static cornering lights, ABS with EBD and multiple airbags.

Beneath the front-end, the 2016 Tucson is offered in both petrol and diesel powertrains. The specification of the petrol mill includes an all-new 2.0-litre, naturally aspirated, four cylinder engine that has also been introduced earlier with 2016 Hyundai Elantra. The petrol mill is capable of generating the maximum power of 147 PS in combination with the peak torque of 180 Nm. 

On the other hand, the diesel engine gets a 2.0-litre CRDi four cylinder unit which is good to produce the maximum power of 185 bhp and the peak torque of 400 Nm. Both the powertrains are mated to either a 6-speed manual or automatic gearbox. There is no option for the all-wheel drive system, all the units come with the two-wheel drive.

Since, the 2016 Hyundai Tucson has launched with the premium price tag, it has only a few cars to go against like Honda CR-V (INR 23.23 - 26.37 Lakh) which is offered with the range of petrol engines. There are a few others as well, however, the new Tucson has no direct rivalry with them, but just because they fall in the same price range, such as Chevrolet Trailblazer and Ford Endeavour.
