India is not so far from achieving a 5-star safety-rated made-in-India car said Global NCAP Secretary General David Ward confidently. In the Stop the Crash event held in New Delhi, speaking to a leading website subsidiarily, Ward said that he was very much happy with the development made by Indian car makers since 2014 after the release of the results of the first crash test on Indian car. “We have seen extraordinary progress in the last year with a lot of significant cars coming in like two, three, four stars. We’re going to get some very good 4-star results. I think before the end of the year it’s quite likely we’ll see the first 5-star car.”

Till now, 23 Indian cars has been crash-tested by Global NCAP which includes- Maruti Suzuki Swift, Vitara Brezza and Renault Lodgy and their results were declared in last month October, 2018. A new set is presently undergoing the crash test on India-made cars in Germany and most probably latest round will give the first 5-star rated cars.
However if one notices, the 5-star rating car may be of the top tier spec and not the base version of the model as supposed by the previous generations of car manufactures.

Ward told a leading website, “At the time of the 2018 Auto Expo, we announced a special ‘Safest Car For India’ award and for that we want a vehicle that meets pedestrian protection norms, has ESC and five star in our protocol. And we’re not saying for that it has to be the entry-level model because we want to incentivize somebody for getting this top award.”
Global NCAP mainly focus on the mass market cars and the criteria for 5-star rated car and few models are assumed to make an entry soon.
