An Electric Transportation Culture Needs to be Adopted in India: Sohinder Gill

The desire for electric vehicles in India has been increasing day by day as the fumes discharged by the motor bikes have been soaring up the air and noise pollution at a large extent. The use of these conveyances, however, can not be avoided at all, but we can switch the mode to electric transport for sure. With various technological advancements and latest innovations, the electric machines, today, have been demanded more over the non-electric ones.

Hero Electric, Country’s one of the leading electric bike makers is a subsidiary of Hero group, which produces top notch electric two-wheelers. Sohinder Gill, CEO of the company has highlighted the importance of electric transportation in India and why it needs to be adopted in a wide range as soon as possible. As per him, the transport sector is considered as one of the largest energy consuming sectors of the country. With the enhancing popularity of two-wheelers in India as well as overseas, it becomes extremely important to focus on sustainable energy sources. In order to develop an electronic vehicle culture here, special emphasis must be given to electric scooters.

“As India has always primarily procured oil via imports, the existing volatile situation in the Middle East and a devalued rupee puts enormous pressure on our foreign reserves to import petroleum. A rise in EV culture will help to reduce the burden and slowly make a transition towards sustainable energy resources,” says, Gill, drawing attention on the existing fuel reserves.

The four eminent needs of an electric vehicle buyer are the charging time, driving range, battery replacement expenses and top speed the two-wheeler can attain. Gill affirmed that the ongoing production has been getting all the improvisations and fitment of new and advanced battery technologies.

Highlighting the point of how the government can raise the demand of electric two wheelers in the country, he said, “This is one of the most essential aspects that the government should focus on. It is necessary to induce consumers to buy EVs as this is the only way manufacturers who are shutting shop will look to find a way back in. Cash incentives for OEMs, implementing subsidies as promised, centralized VAT rebate rather than individual states provision are some of the steps the government should take. EVs should be supported by fiscal concessions such as rebate in Sales Tax, Excise and Custom Duty, VAT etc. An analysis of the EV scenario shows that if the initial cost of capital is brought down by 30 per cent, a major surge towards electronic vehicles is predicted.”

One of the good ideas apart from the aforementioned suggestions given by the Hero Electric CEO was the addition of awareness campaigns. Moreover, he proposed that an EV foundation can be set up by an initial investment towards building an infrastructure. As the 1.2 billion strong market is facing a crunch time in saving energy resources, this might aid considerably.
