Though the new BMW Compact sedan has been seen many a times under the testing phase and was unofficially named the BMW 1 Series sedan, but now there are unconfirmed reports claiming it to be based on the UKL platform, making it the first ever FWD BMW sedan. On the design front the BMW Compact Sedan is designed similar to a traditional BMW sedan, but on a minor scale. As fas as interiors are concerned, the model gets leather seats, heads-up display, orange-colored accent lighting, a panoramic glass roof, touch-sensitive controls, and a freestanding infotainment system with an 8.8-inch display as shown in the image below.

Though the company officials have made no official declaration on the powertrain details of the Compact Sedan but since the model is based on the UKL platform, it is expected to come equipped with 3- and 4-cylinder engines from other UKL-based products like the 2-Series Active Tourer. It will also feature a FWD as standard, an xDrive system could be seen as optional in higher variants.

Entry-level compact luxury sedans like the Mercedes CLA and Audi A3 successfully generated strong and good sales figures, so taking into consideration the facts, even BMW India decided to push volumes from 2017 which can also be seen as an entry gate for BMW 1 Series sedan in India. If it happens, the model will be assembled at the company’s plant in Chennai, with good localization levels.
