First Time: Perodua Axia spotted testing in India

The Malaysia-based car maker, Perodua is planning to enter the world’s fastest growing automobile market. As the company’s hatchback segment car, Axia was recently snapped in Mumbai during its public road test. During the test run, the car was completely undisguised and was carrying some testing equipment.

Manufactured at company's second facility near Rawang, Malaysia, the small budget car is currently being sold only in its home market. It gets a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder all-aluminium petrol engine beneath the front-end. The engine is tuned to churn out the maximum power of 65.71 bhp in combination with the peak torque of 90 Nm of torque. The gearbox comes with the choice of 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.

On the looks, the car is significantly the rebadged Ayla model from Daihatsu brand that is being sold in Malaysia. Moreover, it has also been reported that Toyota is planning to introduce the Daihatsu brand in India. Initially, the Daihatsu cars will be sold in the country under the Toyota moniker and target the small budget car segment in the country.

Coming back to the test mule, so if the Perodua has no intention to hit the Indian market for now, then what is its model doing in the country. Here is the thing, Perodua Axia hatchback is based on the Daihatsu Ayla and also shares parts with it. So, it might be the car’s components which are being tested on the Indian roads, instead of the car itself. However, it is too early to forecast the Malaysian brand’s strategy. Although, whenever it happens, it would not be easy for the company as there is a lot of competition in the small car segment in India.
