Honda City Surpasses Seven Lakh Units Sales Landmark in India

One of the most preferred offerings in the mid-size sedan segment Honda City has crossed the milestone of seven-lakh unit sales in India, as reported by the automaker. The model’s popularity in India can be considered through its 25 percent share in worldwide sales that makes the country the largest market for the City.

Glad to achieve this landmark, Yoichiro Ueno, President & CEO, Honda Cars India Ltd. said, “The City is our bestseller model in India and the only premium sedan to achieve cumulative sales of seven lakh units in the country. With a strong legacy of four generations, the City brand has evolved with the changing tastes and aspirations of our customers. We thank all our City customers for their patronage of the brand.”

In India, the City started its journey in 1998 and the current generation model is the first being offered with a diesel engine variant. In its fourth generation, the mentioned diesel variant is the brand’s best selling City yet with the dispatched units over 2.7 lakh.

Earlier this year, Honda City went through a makeover in terms of styling and a few additional features that include electric sunroof, 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, automatic LED headlamps, fog lamps, daytime running lamps and LED inserts for the tail-lamps. Moreover, in order to provide an upgraded feel, the carmaker introduced a top-spec City ZX variant that got additional attributes including rain-sensing wipers, a boot-lid spoiler, 16-inch alloys and six airbags.

Beneath the front end, the brand offers two engine choices for the City that is a 1.5-litre petrol and a 1.5-litre diesel engine. However, the gearbox options are different both the engine trims. The petrol variant comes mated to a five-speed manual or CVT transmission. while the diesel variant only availed by a manual unit.

Lately, India has come up as the largest market for Honda by overtaking Indonesia leaving behind Japan and China in Asia. In next three years, the brand is planning to introduce six new models including the new Honda City. The fifth generation Honda City will be more premium in terms of added features and interior. Also, the model will be offered with improved BS-VI diesel engine option along with a probable hybrid trim. The upgraded trim will be able to comply the Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE) norms.
