India-Bound Next-gen Toyota Camry Unveiled in Japan, Expected India Launch in 2018

The Japanese auto giant showcased the US-spec 2018 Toyota Camry at the 2017 Detroit Motor Show a few months back, and now the carmaker has revealed the global version of the next-gen premium hybrid sedan at its home, in Japan. The India-bound new Camry is likely to be similar to that of the Japanese-spec version in terms of appearance and list of feature details, as both the current generation models are the same.

The outgoing Toyota Camry is being sold in two versions across the globe - one appeal for the sporty design specifically developed for the USA, Australia and the Middle East, however, Thailand markets it as a special ‘ESPORT’ variant, while the other follows more premium and sophisticated design theory, mostly targets the Asian and European market.

With the eighth generation update, the carmaker reflects its unified design approach, as the US and Japanese-spec hybrid models share similar identities. However, the later one comes with additional fog lamps fitted at the lower front. The 2018 Camry boasts of a number of distinct styling cues, with the most stunning details including a flamboyant seven-slat air dam grille for the premium one, and an x-shaped mesh grille pattern for the sportier one.

The changes between the two include removal of the marker light from the headlamps on the global-spec model, along with the addition of horizontal fog lamps at the each end of the air dam.

The story is no different from the inside, the eighth-gen Camry hybrid offers an elegant and smart cockpit, and inside the cabin details for both the US-spec and Japan-spec versions are identical to each other. However, there are subtle changes between the two depending on the targeted audience. Several noteworthy changes include excess use of wood inserts and different infotainment system with five and four control buttons.

The all-new 2018 Toyota Camry is based on the carmaker’s TNGA-platform and measures 4,879.34 mm in length, 1,838.96 mm in width and 1,445.26 mm in height, along with a wheelbase 2,824.48 mm.

The Japanese carmaker has not revealed the mechanical details of the Japanese-spec 2018 Toyota Camry, however, considering the Indian market, the carmaker is likely to offer a 2.5-litre motor coupled with carmaker’s next-gen Toyota Hybrid System (THS II). Similar to the outgoing version, the hybrid powertrain could be coupled with a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission).

In addition to this, Toyota is also expected to bring a non-hybrid variant for the Indian market just like it offers with the current-gen model. It is likely to be powered by a new 2.5-litre 4-litre petrol unit set up borrowed from the company's Dynamic Force engine family. The engine will be coupled with a new 8-speed automatic transmission.
