Kia Picanto GT-Line - The Cheapest Performance Hatchback in the World!

Kia - The South Korean automaker showcased the 3rd generation Kia Picanto at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. Following its home debut in January this year, Kia Motors has kicked off the worldwide launch of 2017 Kia Picanto. The ‘Pocket-Rocket’ variant of the hatchback, the sporty ‘GT-Line’ is one of the most affordable performance-oriented cars in the A-segment vehicles.

The turbocharged unit that will go on sale from late 2017, makes it, on paper, the cheapest performance-focused hatchback in the world. The major update that has been introduced in the third generation Kia Picanto, is the addition of ‘GT-Line’ variant.

As much as its engine revs beneath the hood, the similar sporty spirit has been carried out on the outside. The designing and styling cues inspirations are borrowed from that of the company's high-performance GT cars, such as the Kia Optima GT. Other sporty treatments made to the exteriors include red, silver and black accent to highlight the details such as the front grille and air intakes.

Moving on the insides, Kia Motors offers a range of interior themes with Picanto GT-Line model, namely Gloss Black, Brown, Blue, Red and Lime. In addition to this, the GT-Line S features a D-cut steering wheel and stainless steel pedals.

Under the hood, that gives the Kia Picanto GT-Line a higher place among its rivals, is a petrol-powered 1.0-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged mill. The engine produces a class leading power of 100 bhp along with a peak torque of 172 Nm, making the car one of the most affordable performance focus hatchback across the globe.

Other powertrain details of the 2017 Kia Picanto include a standard 1.0-litre 3-cylinder Kappa engine from the previous generation and a turbocharged version of the same, and a 1.2-litre Kappa 4-cylinder motor. Transmission duties are handled by a 5-speed manual gearbox in both the 1.0-litre mill, while the 1.2-litre motor will be offered with an optional automatic gearbox.

Considering the possible India launch of Kia Picanto GT-Line, the South Korean automaker could bring the performance-focused model in the country, as there are not many options for the affordable go-fast four-wheels in Indian auto segment. And launching the cheapest performance car in such market, could grab the whole attention from the enthusiasts.

Kia Motors is currently in the middle of talk with several state government officials to set up a production facility in India. However, the company has already kicked off development work of the India-spec versions at the Hyundai’s Hyderabad-based R&D facility.
