Mercedes-Benz is gearing up to beef up its E-class lineup for the Indian market with the launch of E 220d version which is scheduled for June 2, 2017. More importantly, carmaker's new 2.0-litre diesel engine will debut in India with the E 220d and will replace the previous 2.1-litre motor globally.
Details of the new engine include a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder setup that delivers a maximum power and the maximum torque of 194 hp and 400 Nm respectively. The motor is further paired with Mercedes’ 9-Speed automatic transmission.
The German luxury auto giant has been highly concern about the engine norms and the new motor beats the current emission standard, even originally developed to compliant with the Euro VI norms.
The upcoming model is the second diesel-powered new E-Class in the country. A few months back, Mercedes-Benz launched E-Class in India in February 2017 with a V6 diesel setup that churns out 258 hp of maximum power. In terms of price, we can expect a price tag for the new E 220d much closer to the E 200 petrol version, more likely to fall in the region of INR 57 to 58 Lakh (ex-showroom).
Mercedes is expected to bring many new diesel engines in India in the following year in order to meet the upcoming emission regulations. The car manufacturers across the country have already suffered the ban on heavy diesel engine cars once and would not want to face the same again, so preparing themselves against any potential ban in future.
