Next-Gen Long Wheelbase BMW 5-Series Displayed at Shanghai Auto Show

The Bavarian Motor Works has showcased the long wheelbase variant of BMW 5-Series at the ongoing Shanghai Auto Show. The trim is named as ‘5-Series Li’ and will be exclusively sold in Chinese market only. The BMW will produce this country-specific model in collaboration with its Chinese partner company named Brilliance. The 5-Series Li will be manufactured at carmaker's facility in Shenyang, China.

Yes, of course! The biggest update has been made to its wheelbase which is extended by 133 mm over the regular version with the total length of 5,069 mm. However, it is still shorter than the outgoing 7-series by 29 mm. The carmaker also claims that in spite of the increased wheelbase, the overall weight of the 5-Series Li has been reduced by almost 130 kg over the regular weight.

For the exclusive Chinese-spec 5-Series, BMW will be offering different to customise the car accordingly, the list of packages includes a luxury package and an M-Sport Package. Other standard luxury details of the long sedan include sky lounge panoramic glass roof, iDrive system, a touchscreen smart infotainment system with gesture control and others as well.

To enhance the cabin experience, BMW also claims for the improved sound-proofing technology. There is also an option for a touchscreen display mounted on the center arm rest at the rear, along with the storage space.

At the event, the carmaker has not disclosed the under hood details of the 5-Series Li. Although, it might draw the power from a couple of 2.0-litre petrol mills and a 3.0-litre 6-cylinder diesel motor. It seems that China is a big market for the BMW as the carmaker offers a long wheelbase version of the X1 SUV as well.
