Summer is Coming and So is Tesla! Elon Musk Hints India Launch of the Brand

One tweet from Elon Musk and millions of hearts of Indian automotive enthusiasts started beating fast.

The CEO and Co-founder at Tesla Inc., Elon Musk hinted the Indian launch of the brand could be possible by the mid of this year. In a replay of a tweet asking about the India launch of Tesla he wrote, “Hoping for Summer this year”.

The giant electric car manufacturer, Tesla has its plan for India launch since long ago. The carmaker revealed before its grand entry with the latest entry-level sedan, Model 3 and for this company has started accepting pre-booking from the individuals with a certain token amount.

Although, the Model 3 will likely to enter the production by the second half of this year and will see the global launch in mid of 2018.

Thereby, it has to be seen which model will Tesla launch in the country if enters the market this year.

Tesla sees India as a potential market and also has plans of setting up a manufacturing hub in the country, as Mr Musk hinted in July last year that “India could be the site for a Gigafactory”.

The Govt. of India also shows its efforts in bringing the electric automaker in the country. The Indian Minister of Road Transport & Highways and Shipping, Nitin Gadkari visited the American electric carmaker’s California-based production plant last year, for establishing the production unit in the country.

During his Visit, Gadkari talked to the senior official at Tesla to make India, Asia’s manufacturing hub, and also offered a piece of land to set-up EV (Electric Vehicle) plants near major Indian ports to facilitate exports.

However, a pure EV is still impractical to the Indian market due to the deficiency of proper infrastructure for EV. The Indian government is offering few scheme to encourage the auto manufacturers for stepping in the electric segment. Under the FAME scheme, govt offers huge incentives on the electric and hybrid autos, manufactured or assembled in the country to make them more affordable to the public.

The Tesla Model 3 which is said to be the cheapest car from the manufacturer, is expected to be priced around $35,000 (approx. INR 23.5 Lakh).
