Toyota Industries Engine India (TIEI), a joint venture between Kirloskar Systems Ltd (KSL) and Toyota Industries Corporation, Japan (TICO), has inaugurated its new engine production plant at Jigani Industrial Area, Bangalore. This will be Toyota’s first Global Diesel engine plant in India.

Set up with an investment of Rs 1,100 crore, the plant is spread across 22 acres and employs 1200 personnel. The GD engine plant holds an annual production capacity of 108,000 units and will produce the diesel engines in two variants- 2.4 litre and 2.8 litre.

The 2.4 litre engine is claimed to be 13 percent more fuel efficient because of ESTE (Economy with Superior Thermal Efficiency Combustion Technology) that contributes to its enhanced fuel efficiency and is 47 per cent more powerful. The other variant, 2.8-litre diesel engine is 71 percent more powerful and 7 percent more fuel efficient than the earlier used 2KD engines. Both the oil burners are equipped with manual and automatic transmissions on the Toyota Innova Crysta. The engines will also power the next generation Fortuner in India, when it goes on sale next year.
