Volvo Teamed-up with Google to Develop Android Based Infotainment system

The two titans of their respective fields have shaken hands to enhance the in-car driving experience with added technology. Volvo Cars, a renowned name in manufacturing luxury cars with advanced safety features, and Google, the tech giant have teamed up to develop Android based futuristic in-car infotainment system and connectivity solution.

You may hear of Android Auto feature which is developed by Google, enables smartphones to get connected with car’s infotainment display using Android operating system. Volvo, the Swedish carmaker has taken this connectivity technology a step further and eliminated the need for a smartphone at all.

With the recently announced partnership, Volvo is aiming at building its next generation cars with an all-new infotainment system based on the Android 7.0 Nougat, the most recent version of the operating system.

The upcoming infotainment system to be featured on next-gen Volvo cars is smart enough to act on voice command over multiple operations like cabin temperature, windows, and seat positioning. It will be introduced with a number of popular Android application along with the upcoming apps. It supports Google Services and all applications including those developed by Google itself, the carmaker, and the third parties. The most highlighting feature on the infotainment system will be embedment of Google Assistant, first in the automobile industry.

Henrik Green, Senior Vice President Research & Development, Volvo Car Group, said, "We are making an important strategic step with the Google partnership. Google's platform and services will enhance the user experience by enabling more personalisation possibilities, while Android will offer increased flexibility from a development perspective. With the advent of Android, we will embrace a rich ecosystem while keeping our iconic Volvo user interface. We will offer hundreds of popular apps and the best integrated experience in this broad, connected environment.

With this new Android based infotainment system, carmaker believes that it will not just boost the speed and flexibility of in-car services development, but will also enable the buyers to personalise the in-car experience.

Patrick Brady, Vice President of Android Engineering, Google, remarked, "We're thrilled to partner with Volvo to bring Android into their next generation connected cars. This partnership gives us the opportunity to deliver a more seamless experience to Volvo drivers through a full-featured infotainment platform and a rich ecosystem of Android applications and Google services."

Besides the co-development of Android powering infotainment system, Volvo also partnering with Google on another project to update recent Volvo cars with Google Local Search which is a location based service application. This new feature will be launched via an update to existing Volvo car owners with Sensus Navigation.
