Apple to Start Manufacturing in India Soon With iPhone SE

Apple Inc is soon going to assemble its lower-priced iPhone SE models in upcoming months at a contract manufacturer’s plant in Bengaluru India, said an industry source on Friday. A separate source also reported that Wistron Corp, company’s Taiwanese manufacturing partner is also setting up an assembling plant in Bengaluru.

The company has taken this step to boost up its share in the fastest growing major mobile market of the world. To make the handsets cheaper, Apple has been seeking to set up a production plant and has been in talks with the Indian Government for tax concessions.

According to the company, the initial manufacturing process of iPhone SE model could not get started on those conditions. The Economic Times newspaper on this Friday reported that the company has planned to assemble 300,000-400,000 iPhone models in India. There’s still no information if the company would assemble other iPhone models in Bengaluru plant or not.

Last year, Apple shipped 2.5 million iPhones to the country along with a third coming in December quarter, according to a market researcher Counterpoint, the three-quarters of smartphones sold across the country were made locally. Counterpoint added that Apple ranked 10th in India’s smartphone market in fourth quarter.
