IFA 2017: Sony Launches Xperia XZ1, Xperia XZ1 Compact, Xperia XA1 Plus

IFA, one of the mega event to showcase the electronic gadgets, including smartphones, has begun and is witnessing the unveiling and launch of the gadget from the leading companies of this planet. Using the grand platform of the event, Sony has launched its flagship smartphones dubbed as Xperia XZ1 and Xperia XZ1 Compact at IFA 2017. Apart from this, the company has also launched a budget mobile named Xperia XA1 Plus. Both, Sony Xperia XZ1 and Xperia XZ1 Compact come with refreshed designs, Android Oreo and the Snapdragon 835 processor. These Sony devices are among the first smartphones that will come with Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box.

Sony Xperia XZ1

Design wise, the XZ1 is not a big departure from Sony smartphones of old, but more of an iterative refresh. The old three piece construction found on the XZ and XZs has been replaced by a new unibody two piece setup on the XZ1. The Xperia XZ1 is made out of metal with glass on the front. The Xperia XZ1 comes with a 5.2-inch full HD display protected by Gorilla Glass 5 and is intended to be a step below the company\'s XZ Premium offering. The display might not be 4K but it comes with HDR support, 138 per cent sRGB coverage and a host of Sony technologies such as X-reality unit and TRILUMINIOUS.

The Xperia XZ1 is powered by the Snapdragon 835 processor paired with the Adreno 540 GPU, 4GB of RAM and a 2,700mAh battery with Qnovo Adaptive charging and Quick Charge 3.0 support. The battery is quite a fair bit smaller than the 3,230mAh unit found on the XZ Premium. Additionally, the smartphone comes with 64GB of fast UFS storage which can be expanded via a microSD card.

On the imaging front, the Xperia XZ1 comes with the same Motion Eye camera system as seen on the Xperia XZ Premium and Xperia XZs. The smartphone comes with a 19MP Exmor RS sensor with predictive capture, the ability to shoot slow motion video at 960 frames per second and 4K video at normal speeds and an aperture of f/2.3. On the front, there is a 13MP sensor with a 22mm wide angle lens and an aperture of f/2.0 lens.

A new feature on the XZ1 is a 3D scanning mode. The smartphone\'s rear camera can scan an object and save the file as a 3D image which you can then share on a social network or even print via a 3D printer. The Sony XZ1 also comes with a slew of multimedia features. Sony claims the smartphone comes with S-Force Front Surround setup for balanced stereo sound. In addition, it also features technologies like Clear Audio + and DSEE HX. The XZ1 supports Bluetooth 5.0, 4G LTE, VoLTE, NFC, Dual-band MIMO Wi-Fi a/c and USB 3.1. It has a USB Type-C port for charging and data transfer and comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack, a port which is fast becoming extinct in today\'s flagship smartphones.

Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact

In a day and age of massive smartphones with 5.5-inch and larger displays, Sony is still (thankfully) sticking with its Compact line of smartphones. The Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact comes with a diminutive (for today\'s standards) 4.6-inch display with dimensions of 129 x 64 x 9.3mm. Last time around, Sony compromised the Xperia X Compact by giving it inferior hardware as compared to the full-size flagship. This time around, the spec sheet of the Xperia XZ1 Compact is pretty much identical to the Xperia XZ1 apart from a few changes here and there. The XZ1 Compact is powered by the Snapdragon 835 processor paired with 4GB of RAM, the Adreno 540 GPU and a 2,700mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 support - exactly the same specs as its bigger brother. The changes lie mostly in the smartphone\'s design and the display.

The XZ1 Compact is made out of a glass fiber reinforced plastic compound instead of metal and the display has a resolution of 720p instead of 1080p. Thankfully, the XZ1 Compact is IP68 water and dust resistant. It is available in a slew of colors, namely Black, Snow Silver, Twilight Pink and Horizon Blue.

On the imaging front, the XZ1 Compact has the same rear camera setup as the XZ1 with all the slow-motion and predictive capture goodness intact. On the front though, the smartphone comes with an 8MP camera with an aperture of f/1.4, a 120-degree field of view and an ExmorRS sensor.

Sony Xperia XA1 Plus

Sony also announced a new mid-range smartphone called the Sony Xperia XA1 Plus at its IFA event in Berlin. The 5.5-inch smartphone will slot in between the current 5-inch Xperia XA1 and 6-inch Xperia XA1 Ultra in Sony\'s line-up. The Xperia XA1 Plus is powered by the MediaTek Helio P20 processor paired with 3/4GB of RAM and a 3,430mAh battery with Pump Express + 2.0 quick charging support. The 5.5-inch display comes with a resolution of 1080p. It will be available in four color options - Black, Blue, Gold, and Pink.

On the imaging front, the XA1 Plus comes with a 23MP rear camera with an aperture of f/2.4 and hybrid autofocus alongside an 8MP shooter at the front. It supports NFC, Bluetooth 4.2, VoLTE, 4G LTE and comes with a USB Type C port for charging and data transfer.
