5G For India: A Joint Initiative By Ericsson And IIT Delhi

The Swedish multinational networking and telecommunications equipment and services company, Ericsson, has joined hands with the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) and both have signed a MoU to roll out a ‘5G for India’ initiative. As per the memorandum of understanding, the Ericsson will set up a Center of Excellence with a 5G test bed and incubation center at IIT Delhi and use this facility to drive the development of the country’s 5G ecosystem. The program has been formulated with an aim to fast-track realization of Digital India initiatives and aid application development for Indian start-ups and industries. Whereas. the IIT Delhi will conduct research and development to explore how some of the country’s challenges can be addressed with mobile technologies.

Under the 5G for India program, the first test will be conducted in the second half of the year 2017. The initiative is also aimed to put India at an equivalent position with the developed nations, in the terms of 5G network and application deployment. As we might be knowing that 5G is all set to make it's marked globally by 2020, and by mid-2018 limited deployment and 5G trials are expected to start.

Ramgopal Rao, Director of IIT Delhi, says: "IIT Delhi has been committed to developing the latest technologies in close collaboration with industry. We are glad to be hosting the Ericsson Center of Excellence and Incubation Center, providing a big leap forward for 5G technologies ecosystem development in the country. Our core strength of academic excellence will provide a perfect partnership platform with Ericsson and contribute to India’s Digital vision."

Paolo Colella, Head of Region India at Ericsson, says, "The 5G for India program is a major step towards understanding the power of 5G technology and how it can help aid Digital India initiatives, including the development of smart cities. The program will focus on delivering research, innovation and industrial pilots that use next-generation 5G networks as an enabler. It will help initiate cross-industry research collaborations focused on the integration of ICT in industry processes, as well as products and services."

This Ericsson and IIT Delhi joint venture can act as a stepping stone for the 5G connectivity in the country. The 5G test beds created to let the innovation meet implementation, enabling telecom operators, eco-system partners, academia, and analysts to test 5G capabilities live. It must be noted that Globally, Ericsson 5G radio test beds have demonstrated record-breaking throughput as well as tight interworking between network layers, frequency bands, and technology standards. This will help ensure seamless connectivity for billions of connected devices, machines, and things, supporting consumer, business, and industrial applications.
