Gionee To Invest 500 Crores to Setup Manufacturing Unit in India

Chinese Handset maker Gionee will set up a manufacturing unit in northern India, by investing in about Rs 500 crore, to tap into the demand in India as well as to serve markets like Africa and South East Asia as an addition.

The Chinese company, which assembles its smartphones in India through third-parties like Foxconn and Dixon, expects the plant to get ready for operation in nearly about 2 years.

Gionee India MD and CEO Arvind Mehra stated "We are in the process of getting land in northern India. The 50-acre unit has an annual capacity of 30 million units. It should be operational in about two years." He, however, refused to share more details about the location of the plant. As per him "It will be an end-to-end manufacturing unit. It will help us cater to demand in India as well as nearby markets and African region... We will invest about Rs. 500 crore on the plant."

60-percent Gionee models are made locally

One must note that out of the entire production, about 60 percent of the devices are being manufactured locally at operational facilities that function under organizations like Foxconn - located at Tamil Nadu and Dixon - situated in Noida.

As indicated by the research firm IDC, smartphone shipments in India have grown from 17.1 percent to 27.5 million units successfully in April-June quarter, with Chinese sellers like Lenovo, Xioami, Gionee and Vivo taking in the maximum portion of the growth.

The shipments have restored after two progressive quarters of downfall. Samsung got in the lead with 25.1 percent share of the overall industry followed after by Micromax (with 12.9 percent), Lenovo (7.7 percent), Intex (7.1 percent) and Reliance Jio (6.8 percent). Vohra said Gionee India has crossed half million units successful deals on per month basis and by year-end, it is likely that the number will go up to one million. Vohra also states that the organization has seen nearly 100 percent growth last year and expects a "robust growth" this year as well.

Gionee to likely launch four smartphones soon

To take advantage of the festive season and its demands, Gionee India will spend around Rs 400 crore on promoting and marking different activities throughout the year. It additionally plans to dispatch four new smartphones, likely to be priced between Rs 9,999 and Rs 24,999, by mid-October as a major part of its plans to expand and extend its overall market share in India to 7-10 percent by next March from the present status of five percent.

"We had earmarked a budget of Rs. 600 crore this year and we have utilized one-third of it till now. About Rs. 200 crore will be pumped in the festive season and the remaining amount will be used in the latter part of the fiscal towards various marketing and branding efforts," Vohra said. Gionee India has signed up Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt as its brand ambassador and is in discussions for signing up another celebrity but that is yet to be finalized, he said.

Gionee S6s launching

One must note that just yesterday Gionee launched S6s smartphone in India priced at Rs 17,999. The 5.5-inch handset comes featured with 1.3GHz octa-core processor, 3GB RAM, along with 32GB internal memory which can be expanded up to 128GB using an external microSD card. The device also comes equipped with a 13-megapixel rear camera coupled with an 8-megapixel camera on the front side and also houses a 3,150mAh battery.
