FASTags Now Must For Every Four Wheeler Starting 1 December 2017

From 1st December 2017, it is necessary to implement FASTag on all four-wheelers. It is a new move formulated by the According to the official notification from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, a FASTag is “an onboard unit (transponder) or any such device fitted on the front windscreen on the vehicle”.

FASTags Rule has been formulated by the government recently to reduce the time taken on toll plazas in India. In respect of commercial vehicles (trucks and buses), vehicle owners have to get the FASTag before the registration of the vehicle. Those who already purchased four-wheelers can get FASTags via toll plazas, some mentioned banks and digital payments banks such as Paytm.

FASTag based on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Technology and the toll deductions gets updated automatically when the four-wheeler reaches the toll- booths. The payments can be done via e-payments savings account or e-wallet. E- payments can save the time which gets wasted in exchanging currency and searching for change while making cash transaction at toll plazas. Additionally, it also reduces the waiting time as well as fuel expenses.

Currently, FASTag is operating at nearly 370 toll booths across Indian National Highways. So far, a total of 7.5 lakh FASTags were sold all over India until Thursday, it is expected that the number will increase over the coming days.
