Hyundai to Drop 800cc Engine From Eon by 2020

In order to meet the next emission standards, Hyundai has decided to ditch the small displacement 800cc engine that currently powers its entry level hatchback, Eon. The BS-VI norms are set to come into effect in April 2020, and the Korean auto manufacturer has doubt that they could be forced to scrap the 800cc engine.

The small hatch from Hyundai, Eon is currently being offered with a choice of 0.8-litre and a 1.0-litre petrol engine. The 800cc Epsilon motor develops a maximum power of 56hp while the more powerful 1.0-litre Kappa machine makes a peak power of 69hp.

The 800cc model contributes a major share in Eon sales, due to its lower price factor. But it could be the one that might struggle to find its way on the other side after implementation of new emission norms. Making changes to the motor in order to comply it with the new standards, can make it costly for the carmaker. And hence, dropping this small displacement engine is the Hobson's Choice for Hyundai.

And this is not it, the carmaker is up to give a completely new makeover to the Eon and it is likely to happen around the same time. Hyundai is expected to replace the Eon by a more successful ‘Santro Badge’.
