Jeep India Revises Compass Prices Post GST Cess Hike

Post the GST cess rates hiked by GST Council, the Indian arm of the legendary and iconic American carmaker, Jeep has also increased the prices of its most affordable and best selling SUV in the country. Now it is priced Rs 21,000 more expensive for the most economical petrol-powered Compass variant and Rs 72,000 above the earlier price of the most expensive diesel variant. Under cess revision criteria, which include SUVs, mid-size and luxury cars, the brands like Toyota Kirloskar Motor and Honda Cars India have already updated their cars prices for the improved cess rates.

Applicable from September 15, 2017, the new cess rates for SUV segment is the highest among other genres including mid-sized and luxury cars. The SUVs prices now hiked by 7 percent, the new GST becomes 50 percent from 43 percent. while the cess on mid-sized cars increased by 2 percent and on luxury cars by 5 percent.

According to the SIAM’s rule book, if a vehicle fulfill these indexed three conditions will fall in the SUV category:

Length > 4m

Ground Clearance > 170mm

Engine Capacity > 1500cc

By these rules, it is viable that Compass petrol variants belongs to the mid-size car category and the diesel trims fall in luxury category. The petrol one gets propelling power from the loaded 1368cc engine, while the diesel Compass underpins 1956cc powertrain.

Other than the Compass, the several other vehicles from Fiat and Jeep witnessed the hike in their prices. The Fiat products are now costlier in the range of Rs 9,000 to Rs 14,000. Whereas, the Jeep SUVs which are made available in the country through CBU channel is more expensive than the earlier prices in between Rs 2.75 lakh and Rs 6.40 lakhs.
