Mahindra Scorpio to Receive Automatic Gearbox From Aisin Seiki

Mahindra Scorpio has always been a part of the list of leading SUVs in India from quite a few years now. No matter how many additions have been made in the segment, this model has an unmatched efficiency that is still impressing the customers. In July, the company updated its Scorpio with a 6-speed automatic gearbox that was derived from Drivetrain Systems International. Yet again, the automaker is planning to modify the vehicle with an automatic transmission facility. As per the recent reports, this facility will be sourced from Japanese supplier named Aisin Seiki.

The soon-to-be-introduced automatic transmission utilises a new generation torque converter thereby providing smooth gear shifts in a way that there are less transmission losses. As per the official claims, the model will receive two overdrive gear ratios accompanied by 6-sped transmission facility. This setup will also help in delivering more fuel economy than the current mechanical configuration.

Executive Vice President & Chief Purchasing Officer, Automotive and Farm Sectors, Mr Hemant Sikka was quoted as saying, “A transmission similar to the one used in the XUV500 can be adapted in the Mahindra Scorpio in the future. With Aisin, we have gone for a long-term relationship. Going ahead, our first preference will be Aisin for all our new projects, depending o their torque values.”

As of now, nothing else has been disclosed by the company but reports have suggested that this automatic transmission in the Scorpio could be introduced in the late 2016 period. The automaker has also updated its XUV500 with an automatic gearbox and hence it is evident that Mahindra is making attempts to maintain its dominance in the SUV segment through this strategy.
