McLaren has finally unveiled the most-awaited and lightest convertible in its fleet - the 720S Spider. The car is an upgrade to the popular McLaren 720S Coupe and features a convertible roof. The thing to note here is that the roof setup only adds 49 kg of additional weight over the standard variant.
The new car bears a dry weight of 1,332kg, which makes it the lightest convertible in the Company’s car segment. Before this, the Ferrari 488 Spider with 1,420kg weight was the lightest convertible by McLaren.

Since the Spider model has been built upon the 720S Coupe version, it retains most of the power specifications and design features of the standard model. The car has been integrated with a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine which produces 720hp power and 770Nm of peak torque. The added weight doesn’t seem to have any major impact on the speed, as the car still manages to reach 0 to 100 kph in the same 2.9 seconds, however, it takes 0.1 seconds longer to reach 200kph than the Coupe variant. The new car manages to reach a peak speed of 325kph with the roof down and manages to attain a top speed of 341kph when the roof is up.
The car features Company’s Monocage II (carbon-fibre monocoque) chassis which removes the need for any additional structural changes. This enables it to retain the original car’s driving styles while keeping the overall weight in check. The roof has been built using a single carbon-fibre sheet to ensure that the original styling of the Coupe is retained. It operates at a speed of 50kph and can go up and down in just 11 seconds, which is about 6-second better than the 650S Spider.

But that’s not all. The company has made a few other tweaks as well in the new car. It gets 10-spoke wheels, an option to switch the standard roof with a glazed panel that can be changed between transparent and opaque via a dedicated button, and two additional colour choices.
