Tata Xenon Facelift to Get Automatic Transmission and Power Boost

A prototype of Tata Xenon facelift has been spied with the automatic transmission and is expected to launch by the first half of next year. The automatic gearbox for the Xenon pickup was on the papers over a year, it was announced back in August 2015 by the Darren Bowler, former Managing Director at Fusion Automotive (Australian distributor for Tata Motors).

Tata has introduced the Xenon pickup in 2009 as a replacement of Tatamobile and Tata TL 4WD pickups. Xenon has only Mahindra Scorpio Getaway as a sole competitor in the market. A few years ago, Tata also added a commercial version of the Xenon in 2WD system and less-powerful diesel engine.

Recently, other automakers like Isuzu has also stepped in the pickup segment in India, and Mahindra is also in the row of introducing the facelift version of Scorpio Getaway. In order to combat the situation, Tata is actively working on a facelift of Xenon XT 4WD pickup. Currently, the Xenon is powered by a 140 hp 2.2-litre diesel engine which is paired with a manual transmission.

On the facelift version, apart from a 6-speed automatic transmission option, the new Xenon pickup will also get a new Varicor 400 engine beneath its hood. This is the same engine which powers the Safari Storme SUV and also expected to feature in soon to be launched Hexa crossover. Besides mechanical updates, the new pickup will also feature some significant cosmetic updates and new equipment over the regular model.

With this new powertrain, the Xenon facelift will be capable of delivering a maximum power of 156 hp and a healthy torque of 400 Nm. The launch of this new Xenon pickup in India may be delayed, but it will be on sale in Australia by the end of this financial year, as it is the only offering in the Australian market in the passenger vehicle segment by the Tata Motors.
