Triumph CKD Models Get Costlier Post Custom Duty Revision

Triumph Motorcycle is the only brand that got affected adversely with announced custom duty revision back in February by the Indian government. As the changes in government policy attract higher customs duty on CKD models and reduced levy on CBU models. This revision in CKD custom duties turned out in negative for the British company as 90 percent of its products assembled in India. With the increase of five percent in customs duties of CKD models, the price of its most affordable model, the Street Twin will be dearer by INR 40,000 (ex-showroom, Mumbai).

Will come into effect from March 19, 2018, the price revision will rise up the prices of Triumph entire CKD line-up in the range of INR 40,000 to INR 62,000. The models such as the Street Triple and the Thruxton R will be priced around INR 50,000 and INR 62,000 more than the current pricing. Whereas, the price of the lately launched Speedmaster will remain same as of its launch price owing to the company introduced the model with the addition of this hike in price. The Tiger 800 XCA, the only Tiger model available in the Indian lineup since the introduction of new Tiger 800 soon, will not see the change in price. It can benefit the company in clearing the remaining stocks of the mentioned model.

Expressing his views on custom duty revision, Mr. Vimal Sumbly, MD, Triumph Motorcycles India said, “After the budget, this is a great initiative to cut import duties on CBUs, but for CKDs where local assembly is done in India, the import duties are increased by 5 percent and the FTA remains unchanged. We would urge the government to relook into this area.”
