Two Wheelers Price Could See Hike in Near Future Due to Green Tax

The Indian Government is looking forward to introduce a new green tax on two-wheelers (motorcycles and scooters) with combustion engine. As a result for this, the prices of the two-wheelers will see a slight hike in pricing. The revenue collected from the Green Tax will be used to subsidize the development and production of electric vehicles. As per an estimate, with the introduction of Green Tax, the two-wheeler will be get dearer by INR 800-1,000.

The government with an aim to attain one million electric vehicles milestone in the next 2-3 years, is encouraging the manufacturing and sales of electric two-wheelers. However, the Indian market is witnessing a steady hike in the sales of electric two-wheelers though as compared to petrol powered bikes which has reached the milestone of 21 million in 2018, is too low.

As of now, the electric scooters which are adequate to deliver high power and impressive travel range are priced really expensive. It creates a huge difference between the pricing of combustion engine two wheelers and electric two wheelers. In order to reduce this price gap, the government is aiming to heavy localization of components used in the manufacturing of electric two-wheelers, revealed from an official. These components includes motors, batteries, controllers which as of now are being imported in the country. Other than the upcoming green tax, the prices of gasoline-powered bikes and scooters will see the price hike owing to the new BSVI emission norms and the safety norms. The new safety norms are set to hit the country on April 1, 2019.
