Indian motorcycle history was started from 1955 when the Government of India required strong, rough and tough motorcycles for the Indian Army and the police force. Since then, in 1990, India faced immense changes in the segment of motorcycles and welcomed number of options for Indian buyers.

The main reason behind the lifting in manufacturing of motorcycles in India is the fuel efficient 4-stroke engine. At present, the motorcycle constitutes 81.5 percent of total Indian two wheeler market. The top bike manufacturing companies in India are Hero, Honda, and Bajaj. These companies are developing range of innovations for safe, comfortable, ergonomic and user friendly experience to riders. We can distinguish these brands in terms of performance, mileage, resale value, maintenance, costing, etc.

1. Performance: Performance of bikes differs from brand to brand. Bajaj is established with the DTSi engine which is much better in terms of power. We can say that Bajaj bikes are more powerful with respects to Hero and Honda.

2. Mileage: Hero is the most fuel efficient bikes on Indian roads. Honda is also better but comparatively lower than the Hero. But Bajaj is made for performance bikes so it doesn’t stand better for mileage. People who prefer good mileage contrast to looks, they go for Hero bikes.

3. Looks: Bajaj bikes are most stylish and sporty than Hero and Honda bikes. Bajaj attracts the youth between the age of 18-30 for its looks and styling. Hero and Honda companies are also trying to launch more sporty bikes in Indian markets with extra comfort.

4. Maintenance: Hero's service and spare parts are easily available even in local market. Hero bikes has low maintenance cost as compared to Honda and Bajaj. Maintenance is the only factor that can attract those buyers who can’t spend more expenditure on bikes.

5. Safety and Comforts: Honda bikes are safer than other Hero and Bajaj bikes. Its ergonomic feature is unique in this segment, which gives a smoother and safer drive. Safety and comforts are the features that are the first requirement of customers.

6. Resale Value: Hero values much better in market than Bajaj and Honda. Hero's bikes are long lasting and most reliable bikes. It stands higher in market for the customers who want reliable used bikes. We can say that Hero is the first choice for the used bike buyers in the middle class.
