Fairphone 2: World's First Modular Smartphone to Arrive in December

The Dutch company, Fairphone was founded back in 2013. At the same year the company has released the world's first “ethically sourced smartphone”. The smartphone was first landed back in July. The company is said to be the smartphone as the 'first modular smartphone'.

Even the Google has been working for years with this project ara. However, back in August, it delayed the launch of its much anticipated project ara modular smartphones until 2016.

Fairphone 2 smartphone will be ready for pre-order for about $585 and is expected to ship in December.

Hebert, the architecture of the Fairphone stated in the blog post that, "We first examined the key drivers that push people to replace their devices on a regular basis and examined the fundamental features of conventional smartphone architectures that trigger those drivers. After compiling a range of improved features, we selected a subset of items that could be addressed with clever engineering in a reasonable time frame, and explored the tradeoffs that were inherent with those various options."   

At the features end, the Fairphone 2 comprises with a 5-inch IPS screen with a resolution of 1920*1080 pixel and having a 1080p pixel density and is powered by the Snapdragon 801 quad-core SoC along with an Adreno 330 GPU for graphics. The device is loaded with 2GB of LPDDR3 RAM and is having the internal storage of 32GB which is further expandable via microSD card slot expansion.



For the shutterbugs, the Fairphone 2 is loaded with 8 megapixel CMOS camera with OmniVision OV8865 sensor, 1.4um pixel size and f/2.2 aperture on the back side of the phone and is having the 2 megapixel CMOS shooter with OmniVision OV2685 sensor, 1.75um pixel size and f/2.8 aperture on the board.

The company has also announced its collaboration with Jolla to support the operating system for the Fairphone 2 smartphone.  They will release a customized version of the Sailfish OS for the handset. Till  the official announcement of the Sailfish OS, the smartphone will ship with Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box.  

The smartphone also offers 4G LTE connectivity and sports dual SIM cards. The device is backed by 2420mAh battery.
