Huawei to Upgrade Honor 7 with Android Marshmallow in January 2016

Just last month, Huawei came up with Honor Band Z1 at a price of INR 5,499 and now it has started rolling out Android 6.0 Marshmallow update for Honor 7 smart phone. The phone initially came in the month of October and officially went on sale on e-commerce website Flipkart for INR 22,999 the very same month. The update will be available for all Honor 7 users who register for the OTA update. To register users have to provide their device IMEI No and current software version after which the Android Marshmallow OTA update will reach their device in 24-48 hours from the time of registration. Additionally, the users are also asked to enter their email address and contact number (an optional detail).

Huawei’s Honor series has been flooded with new entrants every now and then but when it comes to updates the phones seemed to be somewhat neglected. Huawei isn’t really known for quick updates, specially for their international (non-Chinese) builds, but that’s slowly changing. This time around, Huawei has taken care that the Honor 7, its freshest flagship is upgraded to the Android Marshmallow in India.

For now, it isn’t clear as to what all new features Huawei will deliver to its users with its Android 6.0 Marshmallow update, but it is expected to come equipped with the following additions - Google’s Now on Tap search assistant, better app permissions, app linking, native fingerprint support for the Honor 7’s fingerprint scanner along with performance and battery life improvements. The company had promised that Marshmallow update for the Honor 6, Honor 6 Plus, Honor 4X and Honor 4C smartphones will be released by February 2016.

The Huawei Honor 7 sports a 5.2-inch Full HD display and houses its own Kirin 935 SoC which sports an octa-core setup along with 3 GB of RAM. The phone runs on Android 5.0 Lollipop and as is the case with Honor phones we have seen in the past, it comes with the Emotion UI 3.1 skin atop the Android OS. The phone sports a unibody metal design and is available on Flipkart in metallic gray color. It comes with 16 or 64GB of internal storage option and sports a 20MP rear camera with PDAF and 8MP secondary camera in the front end both having led flash. Now that it comes with Marshmallow as well, it is worth buying at a great proposition at Rs 22,999.

Android updates have always been a pain for the users since it needs to cross a handful of checkpoints to reach the users. The process is extremely slow especially when it comes to the network locked phone as the carrier is required to certify the update before it is rolled out. In the current day scenario, OEMs like Xiaomi are instead rolling out their ROMs on the forums so that the users can manually update their device by flashing with the latest ROMs. By asking users to register for the OTA, Huawei is probably prioritizing users who actually care about OS updates over others who don’t really care to get the latest.
