Amazon VP Diego Piacentini on Nation call Set To Head back To Italy

Diego Piacentini, the Vice President of Amazon is all set to head back to his birthplace, Italy, the country where he lived for 40 years before he moved to America. He is the head of Amazon’s international consumer business since 2012, will be taking a two-year leave from the company to work in Rome for the Italian prime minister, according to an Amazon news release. He will there serve as the lead for the prime minister’s digital technology office for free during his 24-montnhs tenure.

Diego Piacentini, said, "After 16 years at Amazon, it’s a way for me to give back to the country in which I was born, and I travel a lot anyway in my life, so it’s not going to be a really big change". Further, Amazon Chief Executive Jeff Bezos said on Twitter, announcing Piacentini's temporary relocation to his home country, said, "Mr. Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, we are so proud of Diego. Great for Italy. Kudos to all!". In reply to Jeff Bezos tweet, the Italian Prime Minister, Tweeted, "Come to Italy and we can talk about innovation!".

It was not immediately clear what was expected of Piacentini, but the Italian government is eager to upgrade the country's technological know-how in an effort to aid the sluggish economy. Only some 36 percent of Italian households are covered by so-called next-generation-access networks, according to latest European Union data, against 43 percent in France and 81 percent in Germany. Renzi has said he wants to give almost all households rapid broadband cover by 2020. His government has also said it wants to establish "digital neighbourhoods" in cities that will be dedicated to fostering hi-tech startups.

In January 2016, US technology giant Apple announced that it would open a centre for developing apps in the southern Italian city of Naples, its first such center in any European country.
