Bluetooth 5 on Its Way With 2X Speed And 4X Range Compared to v4.2

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), earlier in June this year unveiled the possible specifications of the upcoming Bluetooth 5. Now, the specifications of the upcoming version has been finalised by the industry, which from now onwards will be implemented in the upcoming devices. The new version will be seen implemented in new devices in two to six months.

The reports from the official website of Bluetooth 5 states that the upcoming version will feature twice the bandwidth, four times the range, and eight times of the broadcasting message capacity than the current 4.2 version. The bandwidth has also been increased to 2 Mbps than 1 Mbps. The bandwidth can be decreased according to the needs of the device to provide four times longer range while maintaining the low power requirements.

Mark Powell, Executive Director of Bluetooth SIG, said, “Bluetooth is revolutionizing how people experience the IoT. Bluetooth 5 continues to drive this revolution by delivering reliable IoT connections and mobilizing the adoption of beacons, which in turn will decrease connection barriers and enable a seamless IoT experience.”

The upcoming Bluetooth version will support 255-octet data packages, which is much more than the current version. In simple words, we can also say that it will make better use of 2.4GHz band and will complete the task in a very less time. It will work more efficiently with IoT devices. According to the company, it will be the base of future bluetooth versions, as it has been developed as a groundwork for future upgradations.

Bluetooth v5.0 and IoT

Powell later added, “This means whole-home and building coverage, as well as new use cases for outdoor, industrial, and commercial applications will be a reality. With the launch of Bluetooth 5, we continue to evolve to meet the needs of IoT developers and consumers while staying true to what Bluetooth is at its core: the global wireless standard for simple, secure, connectivity.”

The new version is coming at a very crucial time, as the ABI has researched that approx 48 billion internet based devices are to be installed by 2012, and one-third of the part is covered by Bluetooth. Andrew Zignani, along with ABI research said, “The global wireless connectivity market is growing rapidly, with an anticipated 10 billion annual IC shipments by 2021. The introduction of Bluetooth 5 will create new opportunities in various verticals of the IoT market by reducing complexity and cost and giving manufacturers greater flexibility in targeting multiple applications and use cases.”
