Qualcomm Introduced Snapdragon 630 And Snapdragon 660 Mobile Platforms

Qualcomm, the giant and American multinational semiconductor and telecommunications equipment company, on Tuesday at its Snapdragon Tech Day event in Singapore unveiled its all new Snapdragon 630 and Snapdragon 660 mobile platforms. The new offerings by the company are the successors of its most popular Snapdragon 625 and Snapdragon 653 platforms. As per the announcement, the company will only deliver these new products as mobile platforms, not as processors.

Moreover, both the new Snapdragon platforms are based on a 14nm FinFET process and offer some exciting upgradations such as 4K video capture and playback capabilities, 8GB maximum RAM storage and Vulkan API support. Interestingly, the Snapdragon 660 mobile platform is now also blessed with QHD (2K) video support, while the Snapdragon 630 comes with FHD/QXGA (1080p) video support.

According to the company, the new Snapdragon 600-tier platforms will deliver "advanced photography and enhanced gaming." Apart from this, the new platforms are also claimed to improve battery life alongside fast LTE speeds by the company.

Kedar Konda, Vice President, Product Management, Qualcomm Technologies, while announcing the new mobile platforms claimed that the Snapdragon 660 has already started rolling out whereas the Snapdragon 630 will start shipping out by the end of this month.

Kondap further said that the new platforms will be the first to be blessed with Kryo CPU, X12 modem, and machine learning algorithm in 600-tier mobile platforms. The Snapdragon 660 powered devices will be seen by the end of June in the mobile market, while the Snapdragon 630 powered devices are expected to be introduced in Q3 of 2017. Additionally, both the new mobile platforms will arrive with Bluetooth 5 support, which doubles the data transferred as compared to the previous versions.

Apart from it, the new Snapdragon chipsets also pack Qualcomm Spectra 160, a premium camera ISP, which delivers improved photographic qualities for, “more natural skin tones, superior low light photography” along with higher throughput and enhanced power efficiency for dual camera smartphones. Moreover, the new Spectra 160 will allow your smartphone to support features such as smooth optical zoom, bokeh effect, dual pixel autofocus, and improved camcorder video stabilisation.

The Snapdragon 660 will also pack a Qualcomm Hexagon 680 DSP, which features vector extensions (HVX) for efficient processing of imaging, computer vision, and machine intelligence workloads. Qualcomm, at the launching event, explained that the new Hexagon 680 DSP will help your Snapdragon 660 powered smartphone in offering always-on contextual experiences in spite of using low power.

In term of connectivity, both the chipsets include Snapdragon X12 LTE Modem coupled with the new SDR 660 RF transceiver, which is now capable of supporting peak downlink data rates of 600Mbps. The Snapdragon 660 will also be seen supporting 2x2 MU-MIMO 802.11ac Wi-Fi, which helps in twice as much data throughput and 60 percent lower download power consumption as compared to its predecessor Snapdragon 653 chipset.

Both the Snapdragon 660 SoC and Snapdragon 630 SoC are believed to offer up to 30 percent improvement in GPU performance as compared to their predecessors, Snapdragon 653 and Snapdragon 625.

Additionally, both the new chipsets will also feature Quick Charge 4.0, which is capable of offering up to 5 hours of talk time in just 5 minutes of charging and up to 50 percent of battery life in just 15 minutes of charging. After that, the company also claims that both the new mobile platforms come with Qualcomm Mobile Security for providing security focused hardware-based protection, user authentication and device attestation on the handset.

The company at the launch explained, “This heterogeneous software framework offers support for Caffe/Caffe2 and TensorFlow, making it easy to target and run neural networks on the Snapdragon core that matches the power and performance profile of the desired feature - CPU, GPU or DSP/HVX.”

The company further added, “With the introduction of the Snapdragon 660 and 630 Mobile Platforms, we are thrilled that features such as improved image quality and fast LTE speeds will now be available in a wide array of devices without sacrificing performance or quality," said Kondap. "This ensures that a greater number of consumers will be able to take advantage of higher quality user experiences in camera, audio and visual processing, connectivity, improved CPU and GPU performance, fast charging, security and machine learning.”
