HMIL Celebrated 10-Year Partnership With Chennai Port

Hyundai Motors India Ltd (HMIL) has been into a decade old partnership with the Chennai Port and has successfully exported around 2 million vehicles using this port. In the occasion, Rs 19.69 crore amount cheque was handed over by Cyril C. George, chairman, CPT to YK Koo, managing director, HMIL. Interestingly, the amount was a refund of the wharfage charges for the year 2015-16. As of now, Hyundai-the largest exporter in India, has received Rs 165 crore as refund of wharfage.

Speaking in the occasion, Koo said, “Exports have been integral to HMIL and we are happy to have had a great partnership with the Chennai Port which has only grown and strengthened over the years. This association has not only helped catapult Hyundai as the No.1 exporter for over a decade but also helped HMIL play a critical role in Hyundai’s global operations.”

Hyundai has been using the port for exporting the vehicles before the actual agreement got drafted in 2006 between the two bodies. Before the formal contract, the korean automaker had exported over three lakh units across the globe from the Chennai Port since 2000.

HMIL Car Export Via Chennai Port

It is worth mentioning that the partnership not only helped Hyundai to export their vehicles but also played a significant role in the overall development of the port. For instance, the carmaker helped in building the the coastal RoRo voyages in India. The RoRo ships or Roll-on/Roll-off ships are special vessels used for carrying wheeled objects such as cars, trucks, tanks, railroad cars, etc. Reportedly, Hyundai shipped 800 cars to Pipavav from Chennai Port on February 5, 2016.

With Hyundai playing as a biggest car exporter in India, the chennai port is likely to witness increase in car exports in the coming years. Hyundai currently exports its entire range of popular global models such as Grand i10, EON, i10, Xcent, Elite i20, Creta and the Verna to 92 countries.
