New-Gen Suzuki Swift Unveiled in Japan: India-Debut in Mid-2017

Finally, the Japanese auto major, Suzuki has introduced the all-new Swift hatchback officially to the world in Japan ahead of its scheduled public debut at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. As the media reports suggest, the unveiling in the event has been done basically for the Japanese-spec model, but we can expect the similar model for the company’s Indian car lineup. After getting hints from a set of computer generated pictures, several spied images and a leaked brochure, ultimately, we laid our hands upon confirm details of this car. Let’s make a tour of them!

For starter, the 2017 Swift hatchback has come up with all the qualities that are needed for next generation. From front bumper to the rear LED taillights, all gets subtle refreshments, however, it also has a certain resembles the run-of-the model, thanks to the glasshouse design. Looks like, front fascia has revived with more evolutionary styling and sharp corners. The A and B pillars are blacked out, while an upper half portion of the C-pillar also seems to get the black treatment, thereby providing a floating roof effect. The rear door handle is now placed near to the C-pillar, similar to the arrangement seen with the Chevrolet Beat.

The smooth flowing exterior design equipped with a redesigned grille, the shape of which is now hexagonal and integrated with the “S” logo moved a little above the centre. Nicely carried out are the twin C-shaped recesses housing the fog lights beneath the headlights that connect with each other. Headlamps itself covered by the LED daytime running lights. The bumper too has been restyled and giving a close impression to that of the Maserati GranTurismo Sport. A set of large turbine blade alloy wheels completes the package. The rear profile of the car has also been tweaked that giving a similar glimpse to that of the Baleno hatch and come attached with new LED tail-lights and a lip spoiler combined into the boot lid and a new beefy rear bumper.

Inside the cabin, the next-gen Swift hatchback is going to house sportier theme than before. It sports a minimalist dashboard, flat-bottom steering wheel with mounted controls, a sporty twin-pod instrument cluster, premium quality plastic for the switches and knobs and touch-screen infotainment system. Moreover, the India-spec model is likely to receive a different interior that will be somewhat similar to the next-generation Swift DZire, which also tapped on the cards of upcoming Maruti Suzuki Cars in India for 2017. The high-end trim will possibly get features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, electrically adjustable ORVMs, auto climate control among the others.

Being based on the platform of Baleno hatch, the next-gen Swift is expected to be 15 percent lighter than the said unit that will give it an advantage in terms of the performance and fuel efficiency. The leaked brochure which was surfaced online early this month disclosed that the 2017 Swift will come with no less than six variants for the homegrown market including the Hybrid RS, RSt, RS, Hybrid ML, XL and XG.  Dimensionally, it measures 3,840 mm long, 1,695 mm wide, 1,500 mm/1,525 mm tall, and has a wheelbase of 2,450 mm.

Under the hood, the Swift will have three powertrain option that is based on a light and rigid new-generation ‘Heartect’ platform as the basis for the all-new vehicle. For the homegrown market, a new 1.2-litre dual jet diesel motor mated to the carmaker's Smart Hybrid Vehicle System (SHVS) forms the base powertrain, generating 90 hp and 118 Nm and come along with standard 5-speed manual and an optional continuously variable transmissions. On the other hand, the India-based model will retain the current model's powerhouse of a 1.2-litre K-Series petrol and a 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engines.

Apart from these, it could also adorn a new 1.5-litre oil bumper derivative engineered in-house by Maruti and the newly developed 1.0-litre Boosterjet turbo petrol engine, which will also make its presence under the hood of upcoming Baleno RS, a sports version of the regular unit. A high-performance Swift Sports model, which is also reportedly in the pipeline, could make its global debut late 2017. It is likely to get an updated version of the 1.4-litre turbocharged gasoline engine, generating 140 hp of power and currently underpinning the Vitara for global markets.

Sales of the latest-generation Suzuki Swift in Japan will start from 4 January 2017. The company hasn’t lightened up the information on the debut of such unit for the Indian auto segment but the best possible chance of arrival of this model here in the country is near around the festive season next year.
