Facebook Updates its Real Name Policy to Empower People

Today, there is hardly any soul who isn't aware of the name Facebook, the most popular social networking website. The company officially got launched in Feb, 2004 and since then has undergone several makeovers from the time it first went online. Recently. Facebook again announced a couple of changes to its real name policy to empower people from communities who are either marginalized or face discrimination, including the LGBT community.

The sole motto of the company behind this upgradation is to reduce the number of people who are asked to verify their name on Facebook when they are already using the name people know them by as revealed by Justin Osofsky, Vice President of global operations at Facebook. He in his blog post also stated that - On Facebook, we require people to use the name their friends and family know them by. When people use the names they are known by, their actions and words carry more weight because they are more accountable for what they say and that after hearing feedback from our community, we recognize that it’s also important that this policy works for everyone, especially for communities who are marginalized or face discrimination. That’s why we’re continuing to make improvements in this area.

Last year in the month of October, Facebook had promised that it will make changes to its real name policy after a number of pages of LGBT members got flagged under the pretext of being false accounts. However, from this Wednesday itself, Facebook has rolled out new tools designed after undergoing many conversations with community leaders and safety organizations around the world and in such a way that they focus primarily on two goals mentioned below:

First, To reduce the number of people who are asked to verify their names on Facebook even if they are already using the name people know them by in the real world.

Second, We want to make the process of Name confirmation easy if it becomes necessary.

As per the reports the new version of names reporting process requires users to provide additional information about why they are reporting a name and are also suppopsed to undergo a step-wise procedure, unlike the previous method wherein the people were simply asked to report a name as “fake”. This additional context will help our review teams better understand why someone is reporting a name, giving them more information about a specific situation, and allowing us to provide a more personalized support the company official added. Another report also claims that Facebook recently received major criticism around requiring users to provide forms of legal identification, which do not always reflect someone’s preferred name.
