Idea Cellular Expands 4G LTE Services In Karnataka

India's third largest telecom operator, Idea Cellular, announced that the company has expanded its high-speed fourth generation (4G) LTE services across 39 towns of Karnataka. Within a month, after the launch of 4G LTE service, the company has launched its 4G footprint in 24 districts of Karnataka, covering 20 percent of the total population of the state. Idea Cellular has planned to add 18 more towns by the end of this financial year, taking the total tally to 61.

Idea Cellular has over 170 million subscribers across the nation and in Karnataka, the number of users is 8.6 million. In December 2015, Idea had announced the launch of 4G LTE services in all four telecom circles of the south and earlier this month, the company reached out three more circles- Chattisgarh, Haryana and Punjab.

Ambrish Jain, deputy managing director, Idea Cellular, said,"By March 2016, our services will extend to three more key markets, namely, Maharashtra and Goa, North East and Orissa, and by June 2016, Idea’s 4G footprint will cover 750 cities across 10 telecom circles".

Idea Cellular has 1800 MHz 4G spectrum in 10 circles and that covers 50 percent of the company's telecom market, which contributes 60 percent of total gross revenue of Idea. Recently, Idea signed a pact with Videocon Telecommunications Limited for acquiring 1800 MHz spectrum for two of its key markets- Gujrat and Uttar Pradesh (west). The agreement is intended to increase Idea 4G services in 12 circles that cover 75 percent of the Idea's revenue base in India.

Idea chief marketing officer, Shashi Shankar, said, "Idea customers with 4G devices in these 183 towns can upgrade their existing SIM cards to new 4G SIM cards. The company is also offering attractive subscription plans to digital content". The idea has also partnered leading handset manufacturers and e-commerce retailers for data bundling offers on new 4G smartphones.
