Apple started the concept of fingerprint sensors in its iOS devices with the launch of iPhone 5s and gradually almost every smartphone maker started implementing this technique in their respective smartphones. Now as per the latest reports, South Korean company LG too has brought forward a new fingerprint sensor technology in its devices positioned below the display.
This new incorporation would allow users to touch just the cover glass of the display and as soon as the user does that, the under glass fingerprint sensor module would get activated and the fingerprints would get recognized. LG Innotek CEO Jongseok Park announced this feature and stated that the presence of sensor module under the display would eliminate presence of dedicated buttons, pads or any such kind of switch that had been in use all this while resulting in manufacturing of slimmer devices. Additionally, some even state that it would also make smartphones water-resistant since they would be havin less number of openings.
"We are concentrating on all our resources to the development of the differentiated technology based on the creation of customer values. We will continue to provide convenient, safe, and pleasant user experiences by launching an innovative product," said Changhwan Kim, Head of Research and Development Centre LG.
The company behind the feature LG Innotek has also stated that it has cut down nearly 0.01-inch (0.3mm) slot on the back of the cover display glass and has installed a fingerprint sensor in it with "supreme precision and combination technology."
As per the reports, the fingerprint sensor module has a false acceptance rate (FAR) of 0.002 percent. The company additionally also adds that the adherence side of both the glass and the fingerprint sensor is 0.0098-inch (0.25mm) thick and that it can resist the impact of a 130-gram steel ball that has been dropped from 7.9-inch.
The company LG has not yet revealed when exactly the smartphone users would actually start getting this technology on their handsets or other subsequent devices. However, if what the company spokenperson says is deemed true then the users might see this happening real soon as the company is in constant discussions with other brands to get this product commercialized. The official quote reads, "We are in talks with some handset manufacturers to commercialise the new modules within the year." One must not forget that the company in December last year was tipped to supply Oled displays for upcoming iPhone models.
