Direct-to-home (DTH) players, Tata Sky and Videocon d2h are launching a new set-top box with Internet browsing applications on their set-top boxes. This will allow the subscribers to browse and interact on certain apps.
The new set-top box will enable the subscribers to access the social networks like Twitter, Facebook, Youtube and Pinterest. Saurabh Dhoot, Executive Chairman of Videocon d2h revealed in a statement, "This launch of gen-next HD smart set-top box demonstrates our unrivalled expertise and innovation in creation, delivery and execution of technologically advanced products."
He also said that "This product promises to make your existing TV into a smart TV and ensure connectivity with the world. We are enabling the convergence of TV, DTH and internet all in one place."
Tata Sky is also offering its new service to its current subscribers, at no additional cost in the coming months. This will help you to convert your TV into smart TV, and will be able to create connectivity with not only the world but also standard TV and DTH programs.
It is expected that the new set top boxes will have Bluetooth connectivity and hence you will be able to use an external keyboard for data input.
"We don't look at ourselves as a DTH operator. We are a content distribution platform. The scope of that is defined by what content, which medium, what screen the subscriber wants. That is the level of convergence that Tata Sky is looking at achieving," Tata Sky Chief Executive Officer Harit Nagpal said.
