BMW globally showcased the all new 2017 5-Series on October 13, 2016, and a production ready unit of the same was imported by the Indian arm of German auto giant for the testing purpose at the end of last year. Following the global debut, the new 5-Series is gearing up for the India launch which is likely to be taken place on June 29 this year, says Autocar India.
The 2017 BMW 5-Series borrows its design and styling cues and techno qualities from its elder sibling, the 7-series which was launched last year. Also, it is lighter and larger than the version it replaces. The new 5-Series ditched around 100 kg of weight from its previous generation, thanks to the carmaker’s CLuster ARchitecture (CLAR) rear wheel drive platform.
This is the seventh generation 5-Series model and features increased dimension over the regular model, length is extended by 36 mm, width is increased by 6 mm, height is grown by 2 mm and the wheelbase is also increased by 7 mm leaving more space for the occupants. Now it measures 4,935mm in length, 1,868mm in width, 1,466mm height and features an extended wheelbase of 2,975mm.
The report further suggests that carmaker will offer new 5-Series in Indian market with three engine options (two diesel and one petrol), all are mated to a standard 8-Speed automatic gearbox.
Details of two diesel powered engines include - An entry-level 190 hp, 2.0-litre 4-cylinder setup that will be fitted in the 520d. A larger and more powerful version gets 265 hp, 3.0-litre inline 6-cylinder unit for the 530d variant. The petrol powered engine for the 530i consists - A robust 252 hp 2.0-litre unit which is also fitted under the hood of 330i GT. Apart from these, a plug-in hybrid powertrain for 2017 5-Series is also a talk of the town, but for a later date.
Inside the cabin, the new 2017 5 Series features a 7-Series inspired cabin, as we notified in the earlier posts. The highlights of the upcoming 5-Series include a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Heads-up Display, a fully digital instrument cluster, gesture control for the iDrive system, wireless charging and intelligent voice command function depending on the variant. Standard kit includes multiple zone climate control system, electrically operable front seats, LED headlamps and a safety package.
The major highlight on this next-gen BMW 5-Series is the Remote 3D View which enables the owners to digitally monitor their 5-Series by providing a virtual overhead 360-degree view, even when the owner is nowhere nearby to the car.
