With the unveiling of the next-generation 7-Series and all-new X1, BMW has also come up with hybrid sports car, BMW i8 at the Indian Auto Expo 2016. The main aim to manufacture such type of car is to show the company's sophisticated technology that will surely be seen in other models soon in the future. The BMW i8 is equipped with an intelligent plug-in hybrid system that combines both an electric motor and a petrol engine for generating high efficiency and maximum dynamics.
Mechanically, it's packed with 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine that generates a maximum of 231 hp. The fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are recorded as 47.45 km/l and emission of 50.36 g/km respectively. The power to the rear is transferred via a six-speed automatic gearbox, which is linked with a rear wheel drive set-up.
The company has given to the model its own version of the LifeDrive architecture that was developed for BMW i variants. This new architecture, comprises two separate, independent modules with the combustion engine and electric motor, power electronics, battery pack, and chassis components. For the occupants, it offers 2+2-seater carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP).
Dimensionally, it weighs 1,490 kg and also less than 460 millimeters from the ground and has a near perfect 50:50 weight distribution that ensure excellent handling.
