Centre Plans To Mandate Aadhaar Card Linking to Driving License

After making Aadhaar Card a mandatory identification document for various aspects such as the application for a new LPG connection, admission into college and for availing subsidies benefits from the government. The Modi government is now planning to mandate linking of Aadhaar Card with driving license. The Aadhaar linking is already compulsory with bank accounts, PAC Cards and for e-filing ITR. As reported, the government will start this process from next month.

Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Mr. Ravi Shankar Prasad has reported the plan at the Digital Haryana Summit 2017, a few days ago. At the event, he also confirmed that the plan has been discussed with Mr. Nitin Gadkari, Minister for Road transport and Highways. However, it has not been discussed authorized state ministries. But the centre is in talks with state ministries to mandate Aadhaar Card linking with driving licenses. According to the reports, post process kick start, the citizens have to link their Aadhaar with driving license failing candidates will face the suspension of their driving licenses.

With this change, the government will take on the frauds such as multiple driving licenses issuance in a single person’s name. Other than this, It will also aid in suspending licenses and finding fake licenses. With the biometric details on Aadhaar cards, the traffic police department would easily bring defaulters to book.

Moreover, the 30-year-old Motor Vehicle Act is also in centre’s consideration which seems to have need of amendments as the count of traffic and road accidents are increasing every day.

May mandatory linking of Aadhaar card with driving licenses and increased fines for traffic violations could bring down these accident counts and will help in ending up duplicate driving licenses and duplicate vehicle registration issue.
