Both 40 series concepts are also popularly called as, 40.1 and the 40.2. Both will be manufactured on Volvo’s new Compact Modular Architecture, which also underpins Volvo’s smaller cars segment.

During the unveiling event, Peter Mertens, Volvo’s R&D Chief, stated that, “we should view CMA as being the smaller brother to the larger SPA platform that underpins Volvo’s 90-series family, and says that it will offer a similar degree of “plug and play” flexibility.”

”we have a very successful blueprint for how to do it and that has been flowed into CMA. You could almost say it’s the little brother of SPA when it comes to flexibility and modularity”, he adds.

Volvo is also working with a chinese firm named “Geely” in order to get components at cheap rate. The CMA will facilitate the automaker to apply front- and all-wheel drive on the lineup. Mertens aims to develop a version with an electrically powered rear axle, likewise Volvo XC90 T8 Twin Engine.

Volvo V40 Concept Details

Meanwhile, the 40.1 concept will be offered under the front-wheel drive configuration. The concept’s powertrain is reported to be a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that would effectively drive the front wheels, taking power with the electric motor as well. The engine will be mated to a seven-speed twin clutch gearbox.

However, the power figures is still a secret and Volvo has not revealed anything about it. But, According to Mertens, the new powertrain ensures better power output and transmission. Separate clutch has been added to engage or disengage the transmission from the input shaft.

On the other hand, Lesser details have been made available for the 40.2 EV. The only thing announced is its range i.e 350 km. It is likely to be a SPA-based EV model, expected to be launched around 2019. Though, it's not a matter of surprise as the automaker has announced to bring more cars underpinned with electric powertrain by the year 2025.
