Apple Files Patent for Waterproof iPhone Port

As per a recent market report, Apple has filed a patent for waterproof ports that could be possibly utilised in the future for its devices. Even though the paperwork was filed back in June 2014, it has been disclosed in public recently. This would mean that the upcoming Apple devices will be weatherproof in all aspects including its port for charging and earphones. This mechanism would make use of a "self-healing elastomer". It's basically a rubber sealing on the external jacks meant for headphones or a power cord, which can lose and regain its shape to protect the inner parts.

As soon as a plug is inserted into the jack, the rubber seal would open up and when the plug is removed, it will re-shape itself so as to protect the opening of the device. There are different varieties of this elastomer that can safeguard a device against elements like debris, gas, dust, water and many other things. This would enable you to use your iPhone freely in any weather condition without having to fear about your expensive device getting harmed.

Interestingly, there are other companies which already own a patent for waterproof ports, for instance, Sony Z5 and Samsung Galaxy S6 Active. Apple is still working upon to get one, while it holds a patent for waterproof logic board that are found in iPhone 6S and 6S Plus. However, this logicboard doesn't make the device fully waterproof, yet it resists water to a greater extent as compared to the previous models.
