MS Lumia 650 Without Continuum - Reasons Explained

World's biggest tech giant Microsoft is known for its line of desktops, laptops and a number of smartphones that it keeps launching time-to-time. Adding a new product to the smartphone lineup, the company on Monday announced its latest Windows 10 smartphone dubbed the Lumia 650 aimed at for those consumers who are on a constant lookout for gaining a hands-on experience on the Microsoft business apps at an affordable price.

This device too incorporates a number of productivity apps by Microsoft like MS Office suite - for creation and editing of documents on-the-go, One-Drive for cloud storage and lastly Cortana - Microsoft's personal assistant. Despite all these inclusions, users are still disappointed as the device doesn't feature the most notable feature of Windows-10 Mobile - Continuum - which allows users to connect the smartphone to a display and use it as a Windows 10 computer with a desktop-like interface.

The Windows 10 Continuum feature allows users to connect their smartphones to a monitor along with a mouse and keyboard, using the Microsoft Display Dock after which the phone's user interface switches to an interface that looks like a Windows 10 desktop with Start menu and other elements until the connection is broken by the user.

In terms of specifications, the Microsoft Lumia 650 runs on Windows 10 OS and features a 5-inch AMOLED ClearBlack HD display having a resolution of 720*1280 pixels. It offers a pixel density of 297ppi. The handset is powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 212 clocked at 1.3GHz clubbed with 1GB RAM.

When Microsoft was asked the reasons behind the omission of such an important feature, company's spokesperson stated, "We are aiming to deliver the most productive Windows 10 Mobile devices at all price points. With the Microsoft Lumia 650, our goal was to create a beautiful device that's affordable for businesses to buy and deploy. In this price range we are giving customers smart business tools, including seamless Office and OneDrive integration and Cortana, so users can stay productive and synced across all Windows 10 devices. We encourage users looking for Continuum productivity features to explore the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL."

Support page of Continuum for the smartphone version also enlists some of the possible reasons as to what made Microsoft omit this feature on the Lumia 650 smartphone. According to the page, minimum requirements for Continuum for phones include Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 (MS8952), Snapdragon 808 (MSM8992), and Snapdragon 810 (MS8994) processors, 2GB RAM for phones that give a display resolution of 720x1280 pixels. Additionally, it requires 16GB of non-removable storage with Bluetooth 4.0 and must support at least Wi-Fi 802.11n dual-band. Support for Windows 10 Miracast extensions and USB 2.0 would be an extra advantage.
