A Mobile App to Help Needy Trapped in Natural Calamity

It is said that the advancement of technology is a curse for the mankind, however, if it's seriously taken into consideration and thought over we would observe that despite the curse, technology is also acting as a savior for not only one, but for countless people in some way or the other. One such example is the development of an application by a doctor that helps to locate a person who's trapped in debris in the event of any natural disaster and the situation gets more complex in case communications fail.

As per reports from Pradeep Bhardwaj, CEO of Six Sigma High Altitude Medical Services for Rescue, his company has developed a software application which can be tracked through the mobile phone. The application makes use of ham radio ( a communication device used by amateurs). Despite it being based on ham radio, the application is not for communication but for continuously sending out a signal which can be detected by special equipment.

In terms of functionality, Pradeep Bharadwaj states, “The application does not require mobile network or internet connection to communicate. This is based on satellite which will continuously transmit coded signals but which cannot be used to communicate. The transmitted signals can be detected within a radius of 50 kilometres."

He further adds that "The Real Time Location application is made keeping in mind the rescue operations in high altitude areas where mobile towers network or the Internet fails being hit by a natural calamity. People or soldiers who get trapped in the debris or snow can easily be helped out using the application. He states that people who are tracking the signal won't find it difficult to trace out the location since the application has been equipped with improved GPS that promises of the information being accurate to a great extent.

The application has already gained the approval of Telecommunications Ministry with official licence to operate the system and Bharadwaj says they are now planning to send a proposal on the application to the Health Ministry soon, urging them to get it installed on the cell phones by default especially in smartphones of those soldiers and people who are living in high altitude areas with high chances of earthquakes or landslides. Even C.K. Misra, Additional Health Secretary in the Ministry of Health, said, “This is a good initiative which will help people in high altitude areas and the government would need to look into such applications.”

Bharadwaj states that Six Sigma medical services have been recognised by the Central government, several state governments and countries like Nepal and China for its contribution to saving and counselling thousands of people during the Uttrakhand cloud-burst in 2013, Nepal earthquake in 2015 and China earthquakes and that he and his team had saved more than 5,600 victims who were stuck in high altitudes. The Six Sigma is also known for setting up a base camp at a height of 24,500 feet on Mount Everest during the Nepal earthquake, where they had played a major role in helping the Indian Army rescue people.
