AMD Unveiled RX 480 Graphics Card in Two Variants

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) known for designing computer processors and related technologies has finally unveiled its latest GPU - the Radeon RX 480 featuring AMD's new Polaris architecture. This new involvement would surely be of interest to gamers across the region and it lying in the mid-range segment in terms of price would surely add a cherry on the cake.

Not just mid-range gamers, the new RX 480 is aimed at gamers who are on the lookout of gaming with quality settings turned on, in other words, gamers who target a gaming resolution of nearly 2560x1440. The company is also focusing on delivering its users a smooth VR experience at all levels despite worrying for the price cuts.

Basic Polaris 10 Design

The GPU has been codenamed Polaris 10 and is manufactured using a new 14nm lithography process which helps to reduce both the heat and power consumption. The RX 480 GPU follows the basic architecture of Polaris 10 design and comes with 2304 stream processors divided into 36 clusters. Though its base clock speed is 1120MHz, but it can achieve bursts of up to 1266MHz when required.

The GPU gives a peak performance of nearly 5.8 Teraflops and comes with either 4GB or 8GB of GDDR5 RAM equipped with a 256-bit memory bus. Its total power draw is rated at 150W, and the company has promised its users of giving 2.8X better performance per Watt compared to the previous Radeon R9 200 series cards. Officially released notes highlight AMD's support for emerging DirectX 12 and Vulkan standards, which allows gaming enthusiasts play with hardware capabilities at a very low level which also reduces driver overhead. The new design layout by AMD would allow graphic cards to have a blower-style cooling shroud, three DisplayPort outputs and one HDMI output that would allow a user to use only a single 6-pin PCIe power connector.

AMD RX 480 gives peak performance of more than 5 teraflops

Apart from the GPU launch, the company has also launched a new software dubbed as Radeon Software app that features new performance controls and a new overclocking utility called Radeon WattMan that enables users to tweak voltages, frequencies and fan speeds depending on their requirement as well as track the personal usage on different metrics. AMD is also planning to release two other GPU's Radeon RX 470 and RX 460 shortly for eSports enthusiasts and with this launch, AMD has positioned its GPU card way below the standards set up by Nvidia through its incredibly powerful GeForce GTX 1080 and GTX 1070.

As stated the new GPU is available in two variants: 8GB and 4GB and though the company has not yet declared the price of 4GB variant, it surely has priced the former variant for nearly Rs. 28,990 which comes included with a disclaimer as per which "Please note that the announced price doesn't factor duty, freight, distribution margins, retailer margins, local taxes etc." The global price of the same GPU stands at USD 239 (approx. INR 16,120) and it is expected that Asus, Sapphire, Gigabyte, MSI, and PowerColor will also be releasing their own Radeon RX 480 cards with their own cooling solutions, but stocks are not expected to be available in the market for a few weeks. The global price for 4GB variant is USD 199 (approximately Rs. 13,420).

Price of 8GB AMD RX 480 GPU in India

AMD had previously indicated pricing of Rs. 20,000 for the Radeon R9 380X, however, its final retail price turned out to be Rs. 25,999. If this is considered to be true, one can expect the pricing of latest products to be quite nominal compared to Nvidia's GeForce GTX 970 and the middle tier of the GeForce GTX 1000 range, which are likely to get launched before the end of this year.
