Just a few days back we informed about the unveiling of prototypes of Project Tango devices by Google and Lenovo in the ongoing CES tradeshow. Now, updated report states that the project is in its final countdown with it getting unveiled at the CES tradeshow in the form of a $500 Lenovo smartphone. Both Google and Lenovo too have given their confirmation for this news.
Not only Lenovo but Intel too showcased its Project Tango smartphone at its own developer forum that was powered by Intel's RealSense technology and currently the project is available for pre-orders on the official Intel website at a price of $399. Though, Lenovo has not yet confirmed about the specs or the form factor of the new device, but it is expected to be between 6 to 6.5 inches long in screen size.
Before the official launch of Project Tango, Google had launched its Development Kits exclusively for the developers, so that they can create apps for the same so as to be used by the users. Google and Lenovo have also launched an app incubator program to help more developers build apps for Project Tango. This technology is officially Google's idea to enable smartphones and tablets calculate space and motion just like normal human beings do and then bring a demographic of the same on their Android device.
Johnny Lee, Project Tango Lead, Google said, With Project Tango, the smartphone becomes a magic window into the physical world by enabling it to perceive space and motion that goes beyond the boundaries of a touch screen. He further added that By working with Lenovo, we’ll be able to make Project Tango more accessible to users and developers all over the world to both enjoy and create new experiences that blend the virtual and real world. In words of Chen Xudong, senior vice president and president, Mobile Business Group at Lenovo, The project will help break down silos across mobile hardware and software, creating a more holistic product experience that captures the imagination of today’s consumer.
Project Tango devices use 3D technology since the device views any space as a 3D map, helping the users deciding as to what furniture goes inside the house and creates a three-dimensional image of the entire structure in place of a normal static image. Google believes their Project Tango devices have the potential to change the perception a user carries for a smartphone in the mind. The device can not only scan location and products around it but can be used for gaming and other utilities as well.
Lenovo is now the official partner of Project Tango and has promised a launch by summer of 2016. The company says that the Project Tango device they launch is designed keeping in mind the consumers and is user-friendly.Under the hood, it will have a Qualcomm processor, three cameras (RGB, Fisheye and Depth) so that it can perform the 3D mapping. Even Google showcased the progress it has made till date with Project Tango with Johnny Lee showing how exactly the device can be used to measure space and area accurately and how 3D games like Jenga are created with the help of the device.
