Google and Yahoo are the two renowned email service providers in the Internet market. These two giant free email service providers have taken a strong step to overwhelm the count of spam email ids being used for fallacious processes.
Google, earlier offered to verify whether the user is a human or not, through a captcha code. As an alternate, user can use a telephone number to verify his/her identity. But with the increase in number spamy email ids' created in order to perform fraud mails or abusive mails to others. With this step of both the mailing giants, they will easily be able to filter the right user from illegal emails creators. Google India has initialized this step soon after making advancement in Google Maps by providing Google Maps in Hindi.
Talking on the topic, Google quoted that they are having limited number of registered users that have used the phone number as a verification tool. Except that, all others use the captcha to signify that they are not a robot. But from now user need to either add a telephone number or phone number(which one is available) while creating a mailing id on Gmail. The similar lines were also quoted by Yahoo too. Yahoo had made the requirement of phone number mandatory.
On one side, where this service will create a barrier for illegal mail users, this step of these two companies(Google & yahoo) had created a issue in ISPAI (Internet Service Providers Association of India). The president Rajesh Chharia has replied on this issue as "This is an attack on user's privacy. This should not happen. If they (Gmail and Yahoo) are doing such a thing, then this must be recognized by Indian government on how they are collecting phone numbers,". According to a survey run by Juxt in 2013, out of 90 crore telecom subscribers in India, there were only about 55.48 crore mobile owners.
