Facebook Messenger now allows SMS messaging. People can now read text messages from inside Facebook Messenger, making it easier as now they won’t have to juggle with chat interfaces if their friends are split between them. This is Facebook’s master plan for diverting people to Messenger.
According to Andrea Vaccari, Facebook Product Manager,” There are various SMS clients out there, some focus on customization, some let you select special color themes. But our USP is user convenience”.
The feature will start in most countries from today. Users will need to set Facebook Messenger as their default SMS texting app. To do this they have to navigate via their Messenger Settings and then select “SMS” followed by turning ON the “Default SMS App” option. After doing that all the SMS conversations will by default be shown as purple threads, while Facebook chats would get shown in blue color. Users of any platform can get SMS sent from Messenger, but other person won’t be able to figure out whether if the message was sent from a regular texting app or not.
For now this feature is exclusive to Android platform only. Apple does not provide much flexibility as iOS has no option to change the SMS client, and it is believed that Apple has no plans to bring this feature to iPhones in the near future.

As per David Marcus, Vice President, Messaging Products, Facebook, “there are various Android texting apps in the market out there, but they are not as per the evolving needs of the messaging. He said that Facebook strives to make Messenger the best SMS client for Android, by providing various options like video clips, stickers and location sharing., in addition to messaging.”
To ensure the privacy, Facebook does not store the conversations in its servers. To add a hint of its own flavour Facebook does its little trick as per which whenever user would type a name to compose a new message, he would be presented with a list of all his related Facebook friends with that name above their phone number right from the address book which can surely be considered as a real differentiating point.
