Maruti Suzuki which has displayed the Future S concept SUV at the 2018 Auto Expo, as an SUV measuring under four metres in length, is expected to launch in 2019.
Going by the concept, the production-spec Future S will feature similar body style with an upright stance, high bonnet line and wide haunches. The Future S is intended to a compact SUV with a length and wheelbase shared to the Ignis. Altogether, it will get benefited with the tax benefits offered to cars with a length less than four metres, like the Vitara Brezza.
Dimensionally, the Future S is smaller than Vitara Brezza and will go against a segment below (the conventional hatchbacks) as the Maruti mostly cater in the hatchback segment.
However, the increasing demands for the SUV in the Indian market, diving the Maruti in the direction to extend its presence in same. Currently, the Vitara Brezza is the only SUV available on sale in Maruti’s Indian lineup.
All the aspects of Future S Concepts like an upright stance, a high seating position and a vertical A-pillar, along with well-defined haunches, big wheel arches and the high mounted lights could be carried forward to the production version.
The Future S will be based on Suzuki’s lightweight Heartect platform and will feature only a 1.2-litre petrol engine (expected). Other than this, we could see a sort of electrification with the compact SUV.
The Future S will create an all-new segment in Maruti’s existing line-up, which will go alongside its popular hatchbacks such as the Celerio, Wagon R and Swift. Here, it is likely to debut sometimes near Diwali next year, with an introductory price tag around INR 5 lakh.
